Uma Rapiti Hounds

Whippets & a Greyhound

Uma Rapiti?

You are probably asking yourself, "What does 'Uma Rapiti' mean?"  Uma Rapiti means, "Run Rabbit" in the native tongue of the Maori...the indigenous people of New Zealand.

How did we come up with that name?  In 1997 I served with a US Army Special Operations unit in Bosnia.  One of my fellow officers was a Kiwi officer (New Zealand).  Uma Rapiti is a children's song that we taught to the local children of Banja Luka, Bosnia.

Combine the above with the fact we have a passion for sight hounds...specifically, whippets and we ended up with, "Uma Rapiti Hounds" for a kennel name.

Currently, we have three girls and a boy:  Deja, Giselle, Elena (Greyhound) and Linus.

Our love of sighthounds.  Graceful, sleek, swift, muscular, efficient, and loving...all things that attracted us to sighthounds, particularly whippets.  About five years ago we were searching for a reputable whippet breeder.  We came across the, "Hound Hollow" web-site which is the kennel name for M.E. Robin Barry.  We contacted Robin and visited her at a dog show.  Well, it did not take long for us to fall for a very special whippet...our first furry whippet kid was a spunky, dead on prey drive girl named Deja.  Since acquiring Deja we have added two more whippets to our family:  Giselle and Linus.  Not only is Robin a discriminating breeder, she also offers great hound counsel, and is a wonderful friend to our family!  Thanks for everything Robin.
